St. Augustine: "Pride lurks even in good works"

"FOR every other kind of sin finds scope in evil works, so that by it they are done, but pride lurks even in good works, so that by it they are undone; and what avails it to lavish money on the poor, and become poor oneself, if the unhappy soul is rendered more proud by despising riches than it had been by possessing them?"

~St. Augustine of Hippo: Letters, 211.
